Anika as photographer: My formal training in photography started in the 1990’s. I was fortunate to develop an interest in the medium during a time when the primary focus was the defining characteristic: Light. I was attracted to the camera as a tool for investigating and processing my surroundings, then releasing the interpretations back into the world as visually impactful images.

As a member of Generation X, my experience as a photographer has been more of a convoluted and comprehensive effort than it was for those who came before — and those who have come after. I practically lived in the darkroom as a young person. I produced my images — and a lot of them — via tangible materials: Film, paper, chemicals, contraptions. As I was gaining true proficiency and envisioning a successful path, the digital age asserted itself and I transitioned to capturing and releasing my images using sensors, screens, and digital tech. There has hardly been a moment in my career where I wasn’t learning something about the tools. Instead of letting this be a limitation, I believe it has allowed me to become a more well-rounded producer of images of all kinds.

The means of capturing light and processing images has evolved, but my sense of how to put together an image remain rooted in my foundations. I am a student of light and a practitioner of perspective, line, composition, color, depth of field, reflection, refraction, and feel.

The images I am partial to are a reflection of who I am and the things I enjoy, but my training includes ways to apply the same skills and vision to works and activities that better represent the passions and dedications of others.
